CUSTOM FORGED GATEWAYS & RAILINGS

 CUSTOM FORGED by PETER CATCHPOLE

Railings and gates are usually the last thing on the list for a new home builder. Unfortunately, most of the budget is spent by that time, a C.O. is needed and the only way to go... is a cheap railing.

The homeowner spends the next ten years looking at an unattractive railing which adds nothing to the aesthetic of the house, nor gives it any degree of curb appeal. Sound familiar?

At this point in time the good news is that the old cheap railing has begun to fall apart and it’s now time to replace it. The entrance gate and railing are the first thing people notice when they come to your house; it can say a lot about you. "Let’s do it right this time."

IRONWORK FINISHES

A first consideration is that exterior ironwork will rust if it’s not protected from the elements.

Let’s talk about finishes.

Plan A would be to hot galvanize and paint the work; this will be good for twenty five years, plus.

Plan B would be a powder coating which is a tough baked-on-finish.

Plan C is a variety of paints and oil finishes which require more maintenance.

As with many things, the more you pay initially, the longer the finishes and results will last

SIGHT & FUNCTION

IRONWORK DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

There are a few questions that I need to ask before the design work can start.

  • What is the function of the piece and how will it be used?
  • What kind of house is it (Colonial, Victorian, Contemporary, etc)?
  • What will it be attached to and how will it be used?
  • As well, what is the building code pertaining to this particular project in your town?
  • What are your likes and dislikes?
  • Do you have any style in the house or garden you wish to match up with?
  • Do you have a budget for this project?
  • Also, would you like the piece to convey a particular visual statement?
